Shakespeare Under the Stars: A Midsummer Night’s Revel Comes to Downtown Panama City

Three days of live theater, Renaissance festivities, music, art, food, and Shakespearean mischief will transform Historic Downtown Panama City from July 24–26.

Historic Downtown Panama City will step into a world of kings, witches, fairies, wandering performers, and moonlit theater during A Midsummer Night’s Revel, a three-day immersive Shakespeare festival taking place Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Presented by the St. Joe Community Foundation, the festival is a collaboration between PC Downtown Renaissance and INV Performing Arts. The theatrical productions are directed by Summer and Matt Bonnin.

Rather than offering only a traditional stage performance, A Midsummer Night’s Revel will spread Shakespeare-inspired entertainment throughout downtown. The weekend will combine live theater, music, visual arts, food, interactive experiences, and community activities at the Center for the Arts lawn, McKenzie Park, and surrounding downtown locations.

Friday: Macbeth and the Grand Revel

The festival begins Friday, July 24, with a performance of Shakespeare’s dark and dramatic tragedy, Macbeth, at 5:00 p.m. on the Center for the Arts lawn.

The play follows a Scottish general whose encounter with three mysterious witches sets him on a dangerous path fueled by ambition, prophecy, and betrayal. The outdoor setting should provide an atmospheric backdrop for one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies.

At 7:15 p.m., the weekend shifts from drama to celebration with The Grand Revel Opening Celebration.

Guests are encouraged to wear their best Shakespearean or Renaissance-inspired costumes and take part in an evening featuring projection art, character encounters, selfie stations, a themed bar, live DJs, and a dance party.

Friday’s festivities are scheduled to conclude at 9:00 p.m.

Saturday: Renaissance Faire and Two Shakespeare Performances

Saturday, July 25, offers the festival’s fullest schedule, beginning when the Renaissance Faire opens at 3:00 p.m.

Downtown visitors can explore an artisan village, meet wandering performers, visit typewriter poets, enjoy face painting, and participate in interactive experiences. The afternoon will also feature live music, food and drinks, and a themed bar.

At 5:00 p.m., audiences will have another opportunity to see Macbeth on the Center for the Arts lawn.

The evening then moves into the enchanted world of one of Shakespeare’s best-known comedies. At 7:30 p.m., A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed in McKenzie Park.

The comedy follows four young lovers, a group of amateur actors, and a mischievous collection of fairies whose magical interference creates romantic confusion and plenty of laughter. With the performance taking place outdoors after sunset, McKenzie Park should become a fitting setting for Shakespeare’s enchanted forest.

Saturday’s festival activities end at 9:00 p.m.

Sunday: Picnic in the Park and an Encore Under the Stars

The festival returns Sunday, July 26, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday’s schedule invites families and friends to enjoy a relaxed Picnic in the Park. Visitors may bring their own picnic or purchase food and drinks from local vendors. The evening will also include live music, a themed bar, and a pet-friendly atmosphere.

At 7:30 p.m., the weekend concludes with an encore performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in McKenzie Park.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket, grab something to eat, and relax beneath the stars as fairies, lovers, and comic characters bring Shakespeare’s magical story to life.

The festival closes at 9:00 p.m.

A Celebration Beyond the Stage

A Midsummer Night’s Revel is designed to introduce audiences to Shakespeare in a lively and approachable way. Visitors can attend a play, dress in costume, browse local art, enjoy music, meet performers, or simply spend an evening outdoors in Historic Downtown Panama City.

The mixture of tragedy, comedy, Renaissance-style activities, and interactive entertainment gives the weekend something for longtime theater fans as well as families and visitors experiencing Shakespeare for the first time.
