Man in the Sea Museum Library Project Delayed, Seeks Public Support

World's Oldest Dive Museum Needs Community Help to Complete Public Library

The Man in the Sea Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Panama City Beach is reaching out to the community for support after unexpected delays have stalled their much-anticipated public library project.

The museum, recognized as the world's oldest dive museum, received a grant from the St. Joe Community Foundation to create a public library that would house decades of diving history, rare books, and educational materials. However, contractor issues have brought the project to a standstill.

The museum paid a nearly $10,000 deposit to a local contractor in September for custom cabinetry. After seven months of delays and no work being performed, the contractor admitted he could not repay the deposit.

Museum staff have since moved to a new contractor but are now facing a funding gap to complete the work. The library promises to be a valuable resource for researchers, diving enthusiasts, and visitors interested in the rich maritime history of the Gulf Coast.

The collection will feature historical diving equipment documentation, underwater exploration archives, and rare publications dating back to the early days of scuba diving. Once completed, the library will serve as an educational hub for both locals and tourists.

Community members interested in supporting this unique cultural asset can contribute to help the museum reach its goal. Donations will go directly toward completing the library construction and organizing the collection for public access.
