Medicare Open Enrollment: What Bay County Residents Should Know |
October 15 through December 7 is the annual window to review 2027 Medicare coverage |

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15 and runs through December 7, giving Bay County residents a once-a-year opportunity to review their Medicare coverage and make changes for 2027.
Any changes made during this period take effect January 1, 2027, as long as the enrollment request is received by the December 7 deadline.
For people in Panama City, Panama City Beach, Lynn Haven, Callaway, Springfield and communities throughout Bay County, this is the time to look closely at whether a current Medicare plan still fits their doctors, prescriptions, pharmacy preferences and budget.
What can you change during Open Enrollment? People with Medicare can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, move from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, return from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, or join, drop or change a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan when eligible.
If you return to Original Medicare, you may need a separate Part D drug plan and may also want to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly called Medigap.
Medigap has its own enrollment and underwriting rules, so switching away from Medicare Advantage should not be treated as an automatic path to guaranteed supplement coverage.
Why Bay County residents should review coverage every year Staying with the same plan can feel easier, but Medicare Advantage and drug plans can change from one year to the next.
Premiums, deductibles, copayments, prescription formularies, pharmacy networks, provider networks and extra benefits can all change for the new coverage year.
Medicare plans send members an Annual Notice of Change each fall explaining changes that will take effect in January.
That notice deserves more than a quick glance.
If a preferred doctor is leaving a network, a prescription is moving to a different coverage tier or a familiar pharmacy will no longer offer preferred pricing, those changes can affect both convenience and out-of-pocket costs.
Start with your doctors and prescriptions Before comparing 2027 Medicare Advantage plans, make a list of the doctors, specialists, hospitals and other providers you want to continue using.
Then confirm directly with both the plan and the provider that those doctors and facilities are expected to remain in network for the new year.
Prescription coverage deserves the same attention, especially for anyone who takes several medications or uses higher-cost drugs.
Medicare's official Plan Compare tool allows beneficiaries to enter their prescriptions and preferred pharmacies to estimate monthly and yearly drug costs under different plans.
Some plans use preferred in-network pharmacies that can offer lower copayments than other pharmacies in the same network, so comparing the pharmacy itself can sometimes make a noticeable difference.
Do not judge a plan by the monthly premium alone A $0-premium Medicare Advantage plan does not mean health care is free, because beneficiaries generally still pay the Medicare Part B premium and may have copayments, coinsurance, deductibles and other costs when they receive care.
Compare the total picture, including the maximum out-of-pocket limit, specialist copays, hospital costs, prescription deductibles and the services you actually expect to use.
Extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, transportation or over-the-counter allowances can be useful, but they should be weighed alongside provider access and medical costs rather than becoming the only reason to choose a plan.
Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage work differently Original Medicare generally allows beneficiaries to use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, while Medicare Advantage plans often use provider networks and may require prior authorization for some services.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, while people with Original Medicare typically add a separate drug plan if they want Part D coverage.
The best choice depends on the individual, not on which plan is most heavily advertised.
Free, unbiased Medicare help is available locally Bay County residents who want help comparing options without a sales pitch can contact Florida's SHINE program, which provides free, confidential and unbiased Medicare counseling through trained volunteers.
SHINE counselors can help beneficiaries, family members and caregivers understand Medicare Advantage, Part D, Medigap, cost-saving programs and other Medicare questions.
Residents can reach SHINE through the statewide Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337, while the Northwest Florida Area Agency on Aging also connects local residents with Medicare and aging resources through its Elder Helpline at 1-866-531-8011.
Medicare itself can also be reached at 1-800-MEDICARE, or 1-800-633-4227, for official enrollment and coverage questions.
Do not wait until December 7 Open Enrollment runs for several weeks, but comparing plans takes time when you are checking doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies, benefits and costs.
Bay County residents who start reviewing their choices early have more time to ask questions, confirm network information and make a decision without the pressure of the final deadline.
The goal is not simply to change plans; it is to make sure the coverage you carry into 2027 still works for the way you actually receive health care. |

My doctor leaving the network is my biggest worry.
October 15, putting it on my calendar.
Keeping my specialist matters more to me than the extras.
I need to check if my Lynn Haven pharmacy is preferred.
I might ask SHINE to help my mom compare plans.
That $0 premium sounds better until the copays show up.
I want to compare hospital costs, not just the premium.
I usually keep the same plan, but maybe I shouldn't.
The pharmacy price difference caught me by surprise before.
Does my Panama City doctor know their 2027 network yet?
I need to read that Annual Notice of Change this time.
My drug copays changed last year. I'll look again.
I didn't know SHINE could help without a sales pitch.
December 7 always comes faster than I expect.
I need to check my doctors before October 15.
