Panama City Invites Public Input on Downtown Marina Redevelopment |
City Hosts Charrettes to Shape Future of Waterfront Development |
In January 2026, Panama City initiated a significant phase of public engagement concerning the redevelopment of the Downtown Marina.
On December 16, 2025, city commissioners directed staff to develop a two-phase proposal: a "bootstrap" option focusing on immediate, scaled-down improvements, and a comprehensive long-term plan addressing design, infrastructure, and utilities.
To gather community input, the city partnered with urban design firm Dover, Kohl & Partners to host a series of interactive charrettes at City Hall on January 21 and 22, 2026.
During these sessions, residents and stakeholders used a "green sticker/red sticker" system to express their preferences on conceptual exhibits.
Discussions centered on essential infrastructure, such as boat ramps and trailer parking, as well as community amenities like public spaces, restaurants, and potential lodging.
Popular ideas included a small amphitheater, an aquarium, neighborhood squares, and continuous waterfront walking paths.
Conversely, there was notable opposition to large parking garages and residential housing on the uplands.
Planners will refine the designs based on the feedback collected during these sessions, with revised options expected to be presented to the City Commission in March or April 2026.
Residents are encouraged to stay engaged as the city continues to shape the future of the Downtown Marina. |
There is a little delay in the video, you can fast forward to the 6 minute mark when the presentation starts. |
