MLK Jr. Recreation Center Wins “Apple of Our Eye” Award for New Construction

The newly constructed Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center in Panama City has been honored with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors’ “Apple of Our Eye” Award for New Construction, recognizing the center’s positive impact on the community and its contribution to the continued revitalization of the city.

 

Presented during the Chamber’s First Friday event on March 6, 2026, the award celebrates projects that elevate the beauty, quality, and vitality of Bay County through thoughtful design and meaningful community benefit. The MLK Jr. Recreation Center embodies those values, offering residents a modern, welcoming space designed to bring people together.

 

A Center Built for Community

Developed by the City of Panama City, the MLK Jr. Recreation Center was created to serve as a vibrant gathering place for residents of all ages. The facility provides:

The award was accepted by Commissioner Janice Lucas, Parks, Culture and Recreation Director Keith Meyerl, and Javien Elliott, Manager of the MLK Jr. Recreation Center. City officials expressed gratitude to the Bay County Chamber of Commerce for the recognition and extended appreciation to the many partners, staff members, and community supporters who helped bring the project from vision to reality.

The MLK Jr. Recreation Center officially opened its doors during a grand opening ceremony on January 16, 2026, held during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
