Honoring Old Glory: Panama City Celebrates Flag Day and National Flag Week

Celebrating Flag Day and National Flag Week during America’s 250th Anniversary, a tribute to unity, freedom, and hometown pride.

Every June, Americans pause to honor one of the most enduring symbols of our nation, the United States flag. Here in Panama City, that celebration takes on special meaning as our community joins in National Flag Week and Flag Day, blending national pride with coastal hometown spirit during America’s 250th Anniversary year.

Flag Day marks the anniversary of June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag. Over the centuries, the design has changed, but its purpose has not: to unite Americans under a single emblem of courage, resilience, and hope. In a coastal city like ours, where military families, veterans, and active‑duty personnel are part of everyday life, that symbolism feels especially close to home.

In 2026, National Flag Week begins on Sunday, June 14, and continues through Saturday, June 20, encouraging communities across the country to display the flag proudly and reflect on the freedoms it represents. In Panama City, that tradition is alive and well. From porches and storefronts to marinas and parks, flags wave in the warm Gulf breeze, reminding us of the unity and strength that define our nation.

Local organizations, schools, and civic groups often mark the week with flag‑raising ceremonies, educational programs, and community gatherings. Veterans’ groups share stories of service and sacrifice, while families teach children the meaning behind the red, white, and blue. Even small gestures, like replacing a worn flag or wearing patriotic colors, help keep the spirit of the week shining bright.

Flag Week also serves as a bridge between spring’s patriotic observances and the summer festivities ahead. It leads naturally into the 250th Liberty Bash on June 20 at Millville Waterfront Park and the Salute to Freedom Festival on July 4 at the Panama City Marina, two major events that will fill our waterfronts with music, laughter, and celebration. Together, they form a season of gratitude and joy, reminding us that patriotism isn’t just about ceremony; it’s about community.

As we celebrate Flag Day and National Flag Week during America’s 250th Anniversary, let’s take a moment to look up at the red, white, and blue waving over St. Andrews Bay and remember what it stands for, freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of America. In Panama City, that spirit shines bright, carried by every wave of the flag and every smile of those who call this place home.
