Tyndall Air Force Base Rebuild Progresses with F-35 Fighter Jet Mission

Multibillion-dollar investment positions Tyndall as premier military installation for next-generation air dominance

Tyndall Air Force Base continues its long recovery and modernization after Hurricane Michael, with one of the largest military construction efforts in the Department of Defense now well underway. The rebuild has been described as a multibillion-dollar effort, originally estimated at $4.9 billion and later reported on the base rebuild page as $5.3 billion in combined construction work.

The project is transforming the Panama City-area installation into what Air Force leaders have called an “installation of the future,” designed to support modern combat aircraft and improve resilience against future storms. Rather than simply restore what was lost, the rebuild is focused on creating a more durable and capable base for long-term operations.

A central part of that transformation is the F-35 Lightning II mission. The Air Force proposed basing F-35s at Tyndall after Hurricane Michael, and the first three F-35A aircraft arrived at the base on Aug. 1, 2023. Tyndall is now expected to become home to three F-35 squadrons as the rebuild continues.

Construction includes new hangars, maintenance facilities, hardened shelters, and modernized support infrastructure built to help the base operate more efficiently and better withstand severe weather. Recent reporting shows the rebuild has moved through multiple phases, with dozens of military construction projects planned as part of the overall effort.

The rebuild also has major economic implications for Bay County and Northwest Florida. Tyndall has long been a major economic driver in the region, and the ongoing construction is supporting jobs for contractors and workers while reinforcing the area’s defense-related economy.

Bay County’s aerospace footprint is also growing beyond the base itself. GKN Aerospace operates in the area, and IAG Aero Group has announced a Bay County facility, adding to the region’s broader aviation and defense manufacturing presence.

As the rebuild progresses, Tyndall is emerging not just as a repaired installation, but as a redesigned base built for future missions. The combination of F-35 operations, resilient construction, and long-term investment is expected to shape the base’s role in the region for years to come.
