Community Celebrates Mardi Gras with Furry Friends and Family Fun |
The streets of Historic St. Andrews were alive with vibrant colors, wagging tails, and the laughter of children as the Salty Paws Pet and Kids Krewe Parade kicked off the St. Andrews Mardi Gras Festival on February 6, 2026.
Organized by the Krewe of St. Andrews, this cherished event showcased the community's spirit and commitment to local pet rescue organizations.
BFF Animal Rescue, a foster-based nonprofit, provides safe, loving homes for dogs and cats awaiting adoption.
Their urgent need for more foster families underscores the community's role in saving lives.
Castaway Cats and Dogs, led by dedicated veterinary technicians, focuses on ending pet overpopulation through rescue, medical care, and advocacy.
Their mission, "We are the voice for the voiceless," resonates deeply in St. Andrews.
Salty Cats Rescue aims to alleviate the suffering of feral and abandoned cats by offering shelter, veterinary care, and adoption services.
In a community where cats are integral to the neighborhood's identity, their work is especially meaningful.
These organizations set up booths near the pet costume contest area, allowing families to engage with rescuers, learn about their missions, and support their lifesaving efforts.
Before the parade commenced, pets took center stage in the Salty Paws Pet Costume Contest.
Judged by members of the Krewe of St. Andrews, costumed cats and dogs charmed the audience.
A royal court was crowned, with two standout stars:
King Gizmo "Lover Boy": Once rescued by Salty Cats of St. Andrews, Gizmo arrived addicted to meth and spent 10 days detoxing. What emerged was a gentle, extra‑sweet cat who won over the crowd instantly. His coronation felt like a victory for every animal who just needs a chance to heal.
Queen Annie: A stunning white husky with ice-blue eyes and a regal demeanor, Annie's graceful presence earned her the crown.
Their stories added an emotional depth to the day's festivities.
Looking ahead, Historic St. Andrews is preparing for the 10th Anniversary of Salty Dog Day in 2026, featuring the beloved tradition of electing the Salty Dog Mayor.
Voting runs from February 1 to March 20, 2026, with the winner announced on March 21. To register your dog and to vote go to https://saltydogday.com/
The current 2025 Salty Dog Mayor, Ginger, will soon pass the leash to one of this year's standout candidates: Lila Rue, Mikey, Dexter, Daisy Mae, Titan, or Rose. Watch and listen to Lila Rue why she should be Salty Dog Mayor, a must see
Excitement is already building throughout the community.
The Salty Paws Pet and Kids Krewe Parade itself was a highlight, featuring:
The Panama City Police K-9 Unit leading the procession with confidence.
The ROTC Color Guard following, flags held high.
A full platoon of ROTC cadets marching in formation.
Pet floats and costumed pets eliciting laughter and "awws" from the crowd.
King Gizmo riding in style aboard the TIKI TAXI, greeting his fans.
Queen Annie following with her royal court of princesses, dukes, and earls.
The St. Andrews Mardi Gras Kids Krewe floats closing out the parade, tossing beads and candy to delighted families.
Families lined Beck Avenue, catching beads and candy, and soaking in the unique magic that St. Andrews offers, a blend of community pride, family fun, and furry charm.
The St. Andrews Mardi Gras Festival was more than just food and vendors; it was a celebration of us. The evening hit its high note with the outstanding sounds of Scratch 2020, wrapping up a day of vibrant floats and shared laughter. These are the memories that tie our community together, and we are so glad you were part of the magic.
